Staff Training and Team Development

The staff of the Birmingham Institute for Psychodrama have extensive experience of staff training and team development. Staff training can be custom-tailored to the needs of your team or agency, and can be on a wide range of themes, including:

  • Psychodrama and sociodrama.
  • Experiential groupwork, including the use of active, experiential learning techniques.
  • Role play (includes the seven types of role play and how to use them for different purposes).
  • Attachment theory and attachment-based therapeutic interviewing with adults.
  • Cognitive-behavioural groupwork.
  • Principles of groupwork.
  • Offender rehabilitation, including motivational interviewing and relapse prevention in the context of working with addictions, violence and sexual offending.
  • Working with reluctant participants and managing difficult group dynamics.
  • Working with denial (e.g. denial of offending behaviour).
  • Applied drama and interactive learning methods.
  • Supervision skills.

Team development workshops can incorporate training on the issues listed above and will also include exercises and processes that enhance team functioning, satisfaction and goal-setting.

The staff training and team development work can occur at your place of work or at an independent venue, and can be arranged at a time to suit your team.

Clinical Supervision & Staff Support

Many teams in fields such as social care, mental health and criminal justice find benefit in having the opportunity to reflect on and process their work in a safe and containing atmosphere. This has many benefits, including more effective practice, higher job satisfaction and decreased staff burn-out.

To provide for this need, BIP offers clinical supervision and staff support both to teams and individuals. Sessions can be arranged at a time to suit you, and can take place on your premises or at an independent location.

Contracted Group Work

BIP staff have many years of experience in groupwork, particularly within the fields of criminal justice and therapeutic communities (e.g. for people diagnosed with personality disorders). In some situations where it is appropriate, BIP staff can assist by co-delivering sessions with permanent staff. This can be done on a short or long-term basis.

Programme Consultancy & Development

BIP staff have been involved in the development and writing of structured programmes addressing street violence, domestic violence, property crime, general offending behaviour, addictions, sexual offending and working with female offenders. We have also consulted on programmes for addressing personality disorders, youth offending, diversity issues in criminal justice and the courts, and communication skills for medical practitioners.

If your agency is developing a programme addressing any of these issues, we would welcome the opportunity to discuss your programme with you and offer consultancy or other forms of assistance.
